Job Summary
A Trash Sorter is responsible for separating recyclable materials from waste streams and preparing them for further processing or recycling. This role is common in recycling facilities, waste management companies, and environmental programs, and requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols.
Responsibilities and Duties
Sorting and Segregating Materials: Identify and separate recyclables such as paper, glass, plastic, and metals from non-recyclables
Inspecting and Removing Non-Recyclables: Check conveyor belts or waste streams for items that cannot be recycled and remove them
Operating Equipment: Use and maintain sorting machinery, compactors, and other recycling equipment, following safety regulations
Maintaining Cleanliness: Keep work areas free of hazards, ensuring safety and efficiency
Quality Control: Ensure sorted materials meet quality standards for recycling
Reporting Issues: Notify supervisors of equipment malfunctions or safety concerns
Qualifications and Skills
Physical Stamina: Ability to lift and carry heavy loads (often up to 50 lbs) and work standing for long periods
Attention to Detail: Accurate identification of recyclable materials and proper categorization
Teamwork: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and follow instructions
Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safety and hygiene standards for handling materials
Communication Skills: Clear communication with team members and supervisors
