The WMSS Sharps Technician supports Waste Management Sustainability Services' onsite program at healthcare facilities. This role focuses on handling medical waste and sharps containers, nonhazardous and hazardous pharmaceutical waste, and other regulated materials within the hospital setting. The technician will transport waste containers, monitor waste management procedures, and ensure compliance with applicable safety and environmental regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Transport and handle sharps containers, hazardous, and nonhazardous materials throughout the hospital.
- Ensure proper segregation of waste, labeling, and regulatory compliance.
- Assist in identifying best practices for reducing waste, enhancing operational efficiency, and managing equipment.
- Support less experienced technicians, as needed, with direction and guidance.
- Maintain accurate tracking logs, adhere to good housekeeping practices, and participate in safety processes.
- Follow ISO 14001/9001 standards and report any unsafe conditions, incidents, or damage immediately.
- Demonstrate strong customer service and de-escalation skills when necessary.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s Degree or, alternatively, a high school diploma or GED with two years of relevant experience.
- Licenses & Certifications: 24-hour HAZWOPER certification is preferred.
- Requirements: Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and completion of Cisive background check, drug screen, and vaccination requirements prior to starting.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Motor coordination and finger dexterity are necessary for tasks like machine operation and keyboarding.
- Frequent handling of objects up to 30 lbs, with occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure to occupational hazards, including toxic chemicals, cuts, or burns.
- Daily work within environments with noise, odors, dirt, or extreme weather.
- Must be able to work safely in all weather conditions.
PPE and Uniforms
- All necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, masks, and safety glasses, is provided by the site.
- Waste Management supplies uniforms and safety shoes.
